Microsoft Windows Server System Administration
Peer-to-peer networks, or workgroups, are a cheap but ultimately ineffective, unsecure and unproductive way of sharing resources on a network. In a peer-to-peer network, computers running Microsoft operating systems in the same workgroup may allow each other access to their files, printers, or Internet connection. Peer-to-peer networks require all computers that are sharing resources to be connected to the network and power on for those resources to be available to other users. Additionally, workgroups incur a heavy administrative burden on all but the smallest networks as each user requires a different user account and security settings on each computer that he or she logs on to.
Windows server domains are a cost-effective way of improving availability of shared resources, increasing security and reducing administrative overhead. A Windows Server domain is a logical group of computers running versions of the Microsoft Windows operating system that share a central directory database. This central database (known as Active Directory) contains the user accounts and security information for the resources in that domain.
Each person who uses computers within a domain receives his or her own unique account, or user name. This account can be used to log on to any computer in the domain to which the user has logon privileges and the be assigned access to resources within the domain. Dedicated domain servers provide centralised administration and services (user authentication, file and print sharing, databases, email, etc.) in order that these services will always be available to all users in the domain.
